The Commission to the Body of Christ
Posted February 19, 2010
We begin with the Great Commission in Matt 28:16-20: Then the eleven disciples went away into Galilee, into a mountain where Jesus had appointed them. And when they saw him, they worshipped him: but some doubted. And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth. Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you always, even unto the end of the world. Amen.
These eleven apostles and prophets had an appointment with Jesus to receive instructions on how to start the church. This commission was given, not to all the believers, but only to these eleven, who were to lay the foundation in other apostles and prophets and then in the Body of Christ. They themselves had the foundation laid in them by Jesus Christ himself. The Apostle Paul later received that same foundation from Jesus by revelation and became the Apostle to the Gentiles.
In Ephesians 2:19-22 Paul defines who lays the foundation: Now therefore ye are no more strangers and foreigners, but fellowcitizens with the saints, and of the household of God; And are built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ himself being the chief corner stone; In whom all the building fitly framed together groweth unto an holy temple in the Lord: In whom ye also are builded together for an habitation of God through the Spirit.
In I Corinthians 3:5-13 Paul describes his apostleship in laying the foundation: Who then is Paul, and who is Apollos, but ministers by whom ye believed, even as the Lord gave to every man? I have planted, Apollos watered; but God gave the increase. So then neither is he that planteth any thing, neither he that watereth; but God that giveth the increase. Now he that planteth and he that watereth are one: and every man shall receive his own reward according to his own labour. For we are labourers together with God: ye are God's husbandry, ye are God's building. According to the grace of God which is given unto me, as a wise masterbuilder, I have laid the foundation, and another buildeth thereon. But let every man take heed how he buildeth thereupon. For other foundation can no man lay than that is laid, which is Jesus Christ. Now if any man build upon this foundation gold, silver, precious stones, wood, hay, stubble; Every man's work shall be made manifest: for the day shall declare it, because it shall be revealed by fire; and the fire shall try every man's work of what sort it is.
I like the eleven and the Apostle Paul received the revelation of the foundation from Jesus Christ for the purposes of putting His Spirit back into His church.
