Give and It Shall Be Given
Posted December 11, 2016
In 1977 I had overcome to some degree
and was living in Carrollton, Texas, but I was broke. I had given thousands
of dollars away; for several months, I gave 25% of my gross income away to
preachers in America and I was broke.
One day the Lord said,
“You have been taught get money and give, but my son said, ‘give and it
shall be given,’” and he sent me to this verse in Luke 6:
38
Give, and it shall be given unto you; good measure, pressed down, and shaken
together, and running over, shall men give into your bosom. For with the
same measure that ye mete withal it shall be measured to you again.
I was stunned. “I know that’s what it says,” I said, “I know it says
‘give it and get it.”
God told me to give $100 to the First United
Methodist Church, McKinney, Texas where I was attending. I had some
discussions with him about giving to the Methodist Church and He said,
“Obey me!” I didn’t even have $100, so I told him he was going to have
to give it to me if he wanted me to give. Almost immediately, God provided a
little job, I was paid $100 and I couldn’t get to the church fast enough to
give that money. I didn’t even wait until Sunday. I drove over there and
told them,
“God told me to give this.”
That week I made
$1000. I hadn’t made $1000 in a week in I don’t know how long. I couldn’t
wait for the next week. I gave $100 the next week and I made a little over
$1000. The next week, the same. The fourth week, I gave $100 and had about
$400 return. I said, “Ok this isn’t going to work.” I was a doubter.
God said, “Challenge the devil and tell him to turn your money
loose.”
I was incredulous! “Challenge the devil? I don’t know,
is this God?” I had had seven years of no fun, no money and I was a man that
used to have ample.
Finally I said, Ok I’ll do it.” I can remember
right where I was, Highway 5 and 121. I pulled up to that stop sign and I
said,
“Satan, in Jesus name, I am forgiven of
all my sins, I’ve been redeemed by the blood of Jesus from all the power of
the devil, I’ve been justified from all of my sin, I’ve been sanctified and
I’m covered by the precious blood of Jesus, and you can’t touch me.” That
wasn’t big faith, it was big fear.
And then I said, “I command you,
turn my money loose now, in Jesus name.” Well, I didn’t die.
Look
I’m not being dramatic—challenge the devil? I am just a veterinarian. I did
that about three or four times. Guess what? Money started flowing.
Then the Lord said, “Give $150”. I got $1500 that week and I
thought, “Boy I like this.”
Then it was give $200 and I received
$2000. Then it was $300 and this time I get about $2000 back. “What?”
God said, “Obey me. Give $300.” I did; I gave $300 and received
about $2000 back.
The Lord said, “You think you’ve got a
formula? No, you don’t use me to raise money.”
He continued to
increase my giving; the next thing I knew it was up to $3000 and then in
1986 he told me to give ½ of my money away; initially the ministry’s, but
just a few weeks later I settled in my heart that it included my personal
money as well. My personal giving has actually surpassed ½ of all my money.
A number of years ago a member of my staff said to me, “Do you realize you
are giving 89% of all your money away?” I said, “Well, I’m aware 11% is
paying all our bills.” I have never stopped giving.
“My sheep
here my voice…” John 10:27
Galatians 6:
8 For he that soweth to his flesh
shall of the flesh reap corruption; but he that soweth to the Spirit shall
of the Spirit reap life everlasting.
I don’t ask anyone for
money and I never will. I don’t tell anyone what I need and I never will. I
give in obedience to God; what He tells me and where He tells me and I
haven’t forgotten the poor.
God bless you,
